Michael Krome, Cultural Project Development

I develop spaces, brands and situations at the intersection of art, society and public life, currently a place for encounter and discourse in Berlin.

Berlin, London

My work is not about programming culture, but about creating the conditions under which culture can happen in the first place.

For more than three decades I have developed spaces, projects and situations at the intersection of art, society and public life, from running exhibitions to new forms of gathering.

A place in the making

A hybrid cultural space in the making, in the heart of Berlin. Salon, studio, stage and workshop in one, conceived as a social and cultural situation where different scenes, disciplines and generations meet.

Not the reproduction of an existing institution, but an attempt to build a place as a prototype, with its own conversation format as a pilot project and the question of how a house can become a laboratory.

The Open Conversation

At the centre of my work is the development of open, intelligent, at times provocative forms of conversation. It is not about consensus, but about a setting in which different positions meet each other without being reduced to ready made categories.

This connects the tradition of the cultural salon with contemporary media, performance and participatory formats. Conversation becomes a cultural medium.

Curating & Cultural Strategy

Conceptual development, artistic positioning and programme architecture, for institutions, spaces and projects. I combine curatorial thinking with entrepreneurial project development, and cultural theory with practical execution.

Origins of a Practice

My practice has grown over more than three decades. It began with an internationally oriented gallery for contemporary art and developed from exhibition making through consulting to cultural project development.

The underlying question has remained remarkably constant: how can culture create situations in which people, ideas and disciplines meet each other differently?

Thinking & Influences

An intellectual map, not a bibliography, the lines along which the work moves, from relational aesthetics through situationist strategies to systems thinking.

Let’s develop the next cultural situation.
